You can get a laser lens cleaner cd (cd with small brush on it) - although: a) these are hard to find, b) they are no good if the cd drive won't recognise the cleaner cd!, and c) they are not very vigorous at brushing the lens. I usually dismantle the drive and give the lens a brush with a soft cloth.

I'm on an Imac G4, which otherwise runs well. Or did. Summarily I can neither back-up nor use the install disc.
